United, Educated, Moving Forward…
Welcome back to the 2013-2014 school year!
The start of our year has been smooth considering we have 630 students ranging in age from 4 to 7 years old.
Please bear with us a we continue to train our students and parents on the drop off and pick up procedures. The TK and Kindergarten gate is now open for drop off between 7:45 and 8:00 am. If your child is eating breakfast or in 1st or 2nd grade, they need to enter the school through the cafeteria every morning.
Honoring instructional time is an area of focus for the 2013-2014 school year. We are going to be very diligent in not iinterrupting the classrooms during their instructional day. We want to make sure every student gets the best possible instruction at Lewis Elementary.
Attendance is another area of focus for the 2013-2014 school year. Having your child in school for teacher instruction is extremely important. If your child is going to be absent, please call the attendance office at 760-386-1900 ext. 2 and be sure to send a note or a Doctors note if they have been to an appointment.
I would like to encourage you to get involved at Lewis Elementary so that we can work together to support our students. One way is to be elected for School Site Council to represent the parents and community. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact me. Another way to get involved is to join our PTA. It is a wonderful group of people that work very hard to support your children and our school! I look forward to working with you as a team to help your child to experience success at Lewis!

Lewis Elementary is proud to announce a 71 point gain in their API (Academic Performance Index) from 2011 to 2012.
Our API score for 2012 is 854. We have achieved all of our goals for 2012! Lewis Elementary had the 3rd highest growth in San Bernardino County in API scores. Another measure of our school is AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) required by No Child Left Behind. We met all of the Annual Measurable Objectives in 13 out of 13 areas. This means that Lewis Elementary has been frozen in Program Improvement Year 1.
Our staff has worked extremely hard to support our children and their learning. We also appreciate all of our parent support provided by our PTA and parents working with us to educate the students. We contribute much of our success to our Response to Intervention (RTI) in support of all student learning. This includes our Waterford Early Reading Program, Coyote Den, after school tutoring and scaffolding among grade levels as well as excellent core instruction in every classroom. We also have had excellent Professional Development provided by Silver Valley Unified School District. The teachers are having staff development with Pearson English Language Arts, Common Core Standards, Professional Learning Communities, Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) and Waterford. All of these trainings support our staff to be able to instruct the children with the newest strategies and up to date materials and programs.
We appreciate all of your continued support and we look forward to making even better gains in the 2012-2013 school year!

Please drop your students off in the drop off yellow lane in front of the Kindergarten Gate where the teachers are located. The red lane is for the bus drop off only and private cars are not to be dropping off in that lane or in the parking lot on the bus lane side. If you prefer, you may park in a designated space in either parking lot and walk your child up to the school. Please do not send your child across the parking lot by themselves. These procedures are in place for the safety of your children.
When picking up your children, again do not park in the yellow lane in front of the Kindergarten gate. This is for parents to move through as they pick up their children. Please be sure to move up to the curb and wait for your child to be released to you. We can not send your child across the parking lot so please do not double park. Again, you may park in either parking lot and walk up to pick up your child.
Please honor the cross walk spaces and be mindful of our crossing guards as they help students get to school safely.
